My BFF on her menopause

My BFF (63) said to have  had an early menopause, she thinks it could be due to her having an early menstrual cycle, she was around nine years old when her menstrual period started.      Lucky for her, she did not have any hot flashes and no other indications, except for her period tapering off. According to her, it started off one month with seven days when the monthly visit came. Then, it went down to five days, then down to three to four days and eventually down to one and then none. At first, she missed not having a monthly cycle. “I felt it was one of those things that Make you feel like a woman but eventually, I didn’t even miss it.”       Although my BFF did not take any kind of estrogen or any kind of replacement hormones or anything of that nature. She believes that because she is usually cold, hot flashes were not part of her change of life.      Her testi...

Sleep Better During Menopause: Tips for a Restful Night

Image
As I mentioned before, while in my menopause phase, I couldn’t sleep. Of course, I didn’t know at the time the insomnia was a symptom of menopause, and I probably dealt with it in an unconventional way. I will watch TV from the reclining chair in the room, until I start to doze.     Why the chair and not the comfort of my bed? In case you are wondering, because I was uncomfortable on the bed and would be taking and turning. More than that, I didn’t want to disturb my husband whose alarm clock goes off at 4:30am for work. That would have been inconsiderate.      Was your sleep affected during perimenopause and menopause and how did you deal with it?  I will talk to my friends about their symptoms and share some of their experiences in my next blog post.       Visit https://www.sleepfoundation.org/women-sleep/menopause-and-sleep for more information on menopause and insomnia. #WomensHealth #Meno...

Menopause Tale

I was told and believed that my reproductive years (the time in my life with regular menstrual cycles until menopause), would mirror my mom’s. Oh boy, was that information wrong, I guess we can call it a folk tale.      Not only did I start earlier than her and ended way after the age when she stopped. I started having a monthly cycle at age nine while in the fourth grade. I remember whining to my Ob-Gyn because I was fifty-four and still having a regular monthly period ☹ . My mom started at age eleven and finished in her forties.      Last week, I learned that, a lthough genes associated with reproductive ageing have been located, there is limited evidence on the role of genes in menopausal age” ( Swaminathan, Ajay, et al.).      Now, I am left wondering what else we have been told about this change in women’s lives that are only beliefs or stories and not based on fact. Let us keep the co...
